Singapore is a small but mighty island with an intriguing mix of both eastern and western culture. Due to it's world-renowned modern architecture and spotless utopian streets, a trip here feels a bit like a trip into the future.
I gathered up 9 friends that have either lived in or traveled to Singapore to get their very best recommendations for what to do in this picturesque pocket of Asia. See below for a crowdsourced guide with most commonly recommended items ranked highest.
#1 gardens by the bay
Perhaps the most recognizable landmark of Singapore, Gardens by the Bay is a natural sanctuary in the midst of the city and guaranteed to inspire childlike wonder. Spend a few hours wandering the Flower Dome, Floral Fantasy, and the Cloud Forest. Don’t miss the evening light show!
#2 marina bay sands
Another iconic landmark is the Marina Bay Sands hotel. You’ve probably seen their 57th floor infinity pool on Instagram (which is strictly for hotel guests only, by the way!). Even if you don't splurge on a stay here, you can still enjoy this iconic building by taking a sunrise yoga class or getting drinks at their rooftop bar, @celavisingapore. #3 street food and hawker centers
There's a fantastic (and surprisingly cheap) multicultural street food in Singapore. Take a walking tour to places like Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam. Definitely check out the Hawker Centers: Newton Circus in particular is great for a casual night out - try Hainanese chicken rice, char siu noodle, and an ice cream sandwich from an "ice cream uncle."
#4 botanic garden
Take a sunset walk through the beautifully designed Botanic Garden, the first and only tropical botanic garden to become a UNESCO heritage site. #5 drinks at raffles hotel
The Raffles Singapore is a famous and historical hotel that exemplifies Singapore's British Colonial past. It's a pricey stay, but you still can visit their gorgeous Long Bar to get a Singapore Sling cocktail in its birthplace.
#6 shopping for all tastes
Singapore is one of the best cities on earth for high end shopping. Where to find it? Orchard Street, which is lined with boutique shops, recognizable chains, and large shopping malls. There is also colorful Arab Street, which as the name implies has a Middle Eastern influence and is known for its textile and lamp shops.
#7 dinner at long beach
One of Singapore’s signature dishes is black pepper crab. Try some for dinner at Long Beach. #8 trip to sentosa
Sentosa is an island that that can serve as a relaxing beach retreat during your stay or an adventurous playground. Try bungee jumping here!
#9 coconut club
Don't miss brunch at Coconut Club and be sure to try their signature dish: Nasi Lemak.
